Tihany
is a little village on a peninsula in the Balaton lake. It is the
tourist centre of the region. It has shops, restaurants, museums,
beaches and many sights. Already before the liberalisation of
Hungary, the Balaton lake was regarded as the '‘he Riviera of the
east". Most people there are German speakers. Because of its
location in the inland lake and its special climate, Tihany has a
plant and animal life incomparable to that in the rest of Hungary.
That’s why already in 1952 the area was declared a nature reserve.
Not only the beauty of the region, but also its historical
background, makes a visit really worthwhile. Since 1055 Tihany is
the final resting-place of king Andrŕs, the first Hungarian king.
The benedictine abbey was founded by this monarch. |
